What we test against WCAG 2.2 AA

A website accessibility audit suits a business that sells online, has had a complaint or is planning a redesign, and wants one team to find, fix and retest. It is testing by hand and does not include testing with disabled people, which W3C says finds problems these checks miss. If a buyer wants a certified auditor's sign-off, use a specialist firm.

Keyboard and touch

Every control works without a mouse, and small targets are large enough or spaced apart.

WCAG 2.1.1, 2.5.8

Visible focus

You can always see where you are, and sticky bars do not cover it fully.

WCAG 2.4.7, 2.4.11

Contrast

Text, icons and control edges stand out from their background.

WCAG 1.4.3, 1.4.11

Zoom and reflow

Text resizes to 200%, and pages fit a narrow screen without sideways scrolling.

WCAG 1.4.4, 1.4.10

Text alternatives

Images, icons and charts carry text a screen reader can read.

WCAG 1.1.1

Forms and checkout

Every field has a label, and errors say what went wrong and how to fix it.

WCAG 3.3.1, 3.3.2

Screen reader structure

Headings, lists and landmarks a screen reader can move through.

WCAG 1.3.1

Automated scans

Run first, never alone: on 143 planted barriers, the best of 10 tools found 37% as errors and warnings, 41% with prompts to check by hand.

UK government test, 2017

Widgets and overlays

One overlay vendor may no longer claim, without evidence, that its product makes a site meet WCAG. We test the site as visitors meet it.

Rules by market

Market What applies Ask your lawyer
European Union

The European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025 to services provided to consumers, including online stores. Service microenterprises (fewer than 10 people and turnover or balance sheet total not above EUR 2 million) are exempt. Enforcement is national and varies. The European standard, EN 301 549, is moving to WCAG 2.2: V4.1.1 was published on 2 September 2026 and carries no legal weight until it is cited in the EU's Official Journal. Until then the earlier V3.2.1, built on WCAG 2.1, remains the published reference.

Whether the Act reaches you from outside the EU, and whether the exemption fits.

United States

Private businesses: the Justice Department has no regulation with detailed web standards, but says the ADA applies to goods and services offered on the web and calls WCAG helpful guidance. State and local government: WCAG 2.1 AA, with dates moved to 26 April 2027 (50,000 people or more) and 26 April 2028 (smaller bodies).

What the ADA means for your business.

United Kingdom

Public sector: WCAG 2.2 AA is the stated standard. All UK service providers must make reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010 (the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 in Northern Ireland). The UK is outside the EU Act.

What reasonable adjustments mean for your site, and any EU sales.

Canada

Federal rules (SOR/2025-255): web pages due 5 December 2027 for the federal public sector and 5 December 2028 for federally regulated private businesses with 100 or more employees. Ontario: WCAG 2.0 AA, excluding 1.2.4 and 1.2.5, for public bodies and for businesses or non-profits with 50 or more employees, since 1 January 2021.

Whether you are federally regulated, and which provincial rules apply.

Australia

The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 applies to services.

Talk it through on a call

We look at what you have now and what you want it to do.

We tell you how we would do it and who would work on it.

You get a fixed quote in writing after the call, with nothing to sign until you are ready.

How the audit runs

We test to WCAG 2.2 AA because W3C says content meeting 2.2 also meets 2.1, the version many laws still name. You approve the pages and flows before testing starts, and each fix on a preview copy before it goes live. The issue list is walked through on a call, and the booking page shows call times in your own time zone.

What you get after the audit

The issue list, retest record and code changes are transferred to you on final payment, under the contract. The record shows what was found and fixed on a stated date, and new content can still fail later. The fixed quote depends on the templates and flows, the platform, third-party parts and whether we fix as well as test.

Issue list

Each issue with its rule, who it affects, where it is and the fix. Parts we cannot change name who can.

Fixes

Code and design changes in your WordPress, Shopify or custom templates, on a preview copy first. If your team makes the fixes, we retest them.

Retest record

Each fixed issue retested, with the date and the result.

Draft statement

For your lawyer to review. EU services may also need this information in their terms.

After a complaint or demand letter

Your lawyer decides the response and we supply the technical picture. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Call a lawyer

Do this before you reply to anyone.

Keep the letter, record the site

Save the letter and take dated screenshots of the pages it names before anyone changes them.

Tell us the pages and the deadline

On the first call, share what your lawyer is content for us to see.

What you get from us

What fails, where, and what fixing it involves. We do not advise on replies or settlement.

After a demand letter or accessibility complaint, speak to a lawyer first and keep the letter. We can then test the pages it names, but we do not advise on how to reply.

No, a website accessibility audit cannot guarantee compliance. You get a dated record of what was tested and fixed against WCAG 2.2 AA. Whether that meets a law in your market is a question for your lawyer.

Accessibility law varies by market, and only your lawyer can say what applies to you. The table here is a plain summary of five markets and leaves out New Zealand and the Gulf.

An accessibility widget or overlay does not prove a site meets WCAG, and it does not replace manual testing. The US Justice Department says checkers and overlays can be helpful tools, and that a clean report does not mean everything is accessible. In April 2025 a final FTC order barred one overlay vendor from claiming, without evidence, that automated products can make a site meet WCAG. If your site has a widget, we test with it in place and you decide what stays.

Yes. We fix issues in your WordPress, Shopify or custom templates, then retest. If your own team makes the fixes, we can retest them.
